Getting the best burn from your candles

How to Get the Most From Your Candle

There’s nothing better than lighting a beautifully scented candle and filling your home with warmth, comfort, and fragrance. But many people don’t realise that how you burn your candle can dramatically affect its scent throw, burn time, and overall performance.

By following a few simple candle care tips, you can enjoy a cleaner, longer-lasting burn while getting the very best from your favourite fragrances.

1. Allow a Full Melt Pool on the First Burn

One of the most important steps in candle care is allowing the wax to melt fully across the surface during the first burn.

When a candle is extinguished too early, it can create a “memory ring,” where the wax only melts around the wick. This leads to tunnelling — a deep hole forming down the centre of the candle while unused wax remains around the edges.

To avoid this:

  • Burn your candle long enough for the wax to melt evenly to the edges of the container.
  • This usually takes around 2–4 hours depending on the size of the candle.
  • Never extinguish your candle too quickly on the first burn.

A full melt pool helps ensure an even burn throughout the candle’s life and maximises fragrance throw.

2. Trim Your Wick Before Each Burn

Keeping your wick trimmed is essential for both performance and safety.

A wick that is too long can cause:

  • Excessive smoke
  • Flickering flames
  • Soot marks on jars
  • Uneven burning
  • Faster wax consumption

For best results:

  • Trim the wick to approximately 5mm before lighting.
  • Use wick trimmers or scissors once the wax has fully cooled.
  • Remove any loose wick debris before relighting.

A properly trimmed wick creates a cleaner, steadier flame and helps your candle last longer.

3. Don’t Burn for Too Long

Although it can be tempting to keep your candle burning all evening, overburning can reduce its quality and safety.

For optimal performance:

  • Burn candles for no more than 4 hours at a time.
  • Allow the candle to cool before relighting.
  • This helps preserve the fragrance oils and prevents the wick from becoming unstable.

4. Keep Candles Away From Drafts

Drafts from windows, fans, or air vents can cause candles to burn unevenly and produce smoke.

To achieve the best burn:

  • Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep away from open windows and strong airflow.
  • Avoid moving a candle while lit.

A calm flame produces a more even melt pool and better scent distribution.

5. Store Your Candles Correctly

Proper storage helps preserve both fragrance strength and wax quality.

Store candles:

  • In a cool, dry place
  • Away from direct sunlight
  • With lids on when possible to protect the fragrance

Heat and sunlight can discolour wax and weaken fragrance oils over time.

6. Keep the Wax Clean

Dust, wick trimmings, and debris can affect the quality of your burn.

Before lighting:

  • Ensure the wax surface is clean and free from debris.
  • Never allow matches or burnt wick pieces to remain inside the candle.

This helps maintain a clean flame and prevents unnecessary soot.

7. Know When It’s Time to Stop Burning

For safety reasons, candles should not be burned right down to the bottom of the container.

Always stop using your candle when:

  • Around 1cm of wax remains at the bottom
  • The wick holder becomes exposed

This prevents the container from overheating.
